How to Make Baked Sweet Potatoes

Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C) so it’s fully heated and ready for baking. Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt from the skins, then dry them completely using a clean kitchen towel. Once dry, use a knife to carefully make small slits around each sweet potato. This allows steam to escape while baking and helps the potatoes cook evenly, creating perfectly soft and fluffy centers in these easy oven baked sweet potatoes.

Next, prepare four pieces of tin foil, one for each sweet potato. Drizzle about 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil onto each piece of foil, then roll the sweet potatoes around in the oil until they are fully coated. The olive oil helps keep the skins soft while adding a little extra flavor during roasting. Once coated, wrap each sweet potato tightly in its own piece of foil and place them onto a baking sheet.

Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake the sweet potatoes for about 50–60 minutes, or until they are completely tender when pierced with a knife or fork. Baking time may vary slightly depending on the size of the potatoes. As they bake, the natural sugars caramelize, creating soft, fluffy sweet potatoes with rich roasted flavor.

Once fully baked, remove the sweet potatoes from the oven and carefully unwrap the foil. Slice each potato open and allow them to cool slightly before serving. These homemade baked sweet potatoes are delicious topped with butter, sour cream, Greek yogurt, brown sugar, sea salt, chives, or any of your favorite sweet or savory toppings. Perfect as a healthy side dish, meal prep option, or cozy comfort food.
