Homemade Graham Cracker Crust
A graham cracker base is the basis for many delicious desserts. It is known for its sweet and slightly nutty flavour with a satisfying crunch. This graham cracker pie crust is easy to prepare and is the perfect foundation for the homemade desserts that you are trying to make.
In this blog post, you will learn how to make a Graham Cracker Pie Crust.
What are Graham Crackers?
A graham cracker is a type of slightly sweet, whole-wheat cookie or a type of biscuit. They are made from whole-wheat flour and are lightly sweetened with honey. They have quite a distinctive nutty flavour are very popular in North American cheesecake recipes and are a signature and delicious cookie even though they are called crackers.
What if I Cannot Find Graham Crackers?
Now purchasing graham crackers will not be a problem for people in North America. However, for people who live in Europe this can be an issue. I have found that using tea biscuits or digestive cookies as a straight swap for Graham crackers hardly changes the taste. And you do not have to worry about purchasing an expensive cookie as the cheaper cookies still taste really good. You can use the really cheap ones from your local grocery store, and it should not affect the taste.
How to Make the Graham Crackers into Crumbs?
To make your Graham crackers into crumbs, you are going to crush your Graham crackers or tea biscuits. Crush the graham crackers finely using a food processor or by placing them in a sealed plastic bag and rolling over them with a rolling pin. Fine crumbs help the crust hold together better.
How to Make a Graham Cracker Base
To make the graham cracker base combine crushed graham crackers, sugar, and melted butter in a bowl. Mix the crumbs together until they are evenly coated and the mixture resembles wet sand. Press the graham cracker mixture firmly into the bottom and slightly up the sides of the pie or tart pan. Make sure that the base has an even thickness. Bake the base in the oven for about 15 minutes until it is lightly golden and set. Ensure that it has cooled completely before adding the filling or else the filling can melt.
Benefits of Baking the Graham Cracker Crust
Baking the crust makes it firmer so that it will not crumble when sliced.
The crust is crunchier when it is baked.
A baked crust is less likely to become soggy when the filling is added.
The crust can be used in a wide variety of desserts such as cheesecakes and custards.
The sugar caramelizes while baking and makes the crust tastier.
Do I Have to Bake my Graham Cracker Crust?
The need to bake the crust is really dependent on what the recipe that you are making calls for. This graham cracker crust can be placed into the fridge until cool and used straight from the fridge like in my No-Bake Cherry Cheesecake Recipe. Or it can be baked and then cooled before using. Baking it can sometimes just be personal preference because of the crisper texture difference.
Ingredients
Graham Crackers: graham crackers provide the base of the crust with a crunchy texture and a nutty flavour that is characteristic of graham crackers.
Sugar: the sugar sweetens the graham cracker base.
Unsalted Butter: unsalted butter is melted and the coats the graham crackers and sugar to allow the ingredients to become cohesive and stick together.
Tips
Use high-quality graham crackers for the best flavour. You can use regular, honey, or even chocolate-flavoured graham crackers.
Typically, granulated sugar is used, but brown sugar can also be used for a deeper, more caramel-like flavour.
Unsalted butter is commonly used to control the amount of salt in the recipe, though salted butter can be used for an additional hint of flavour.
Combine the crumbs, sugar, and melted butter thoroughly until all the crumbs are evenly coated. The mixture should resemble wet sand and hold together when pressed.
Allow the crust to cool completely before adding your filling to prevent the filling from melting the butter in the crust, which can make it soggy.
